News flash: remote work isn’t just a trend popular with Starbucks-frequenting freelancers and work-from-home parents. It’s an approach to work (and work-life balance) that’s increasingly becoming a viable business model for companies and a desirable benefit for employees. In fact, Global Workplace Analytics’ analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005–2014 American Community Survey indicates that 80 to 90% of the U.S. workforce would like to work remotely at least part time.
Meet Federico. He’s a product manager at Crossover. Federico has been with Crossover since the company’s early days. He was introduced to product management while studying for his master’s degree in engineering management from Dartmouth College. It was there that a classmate told him about Crossover and encouraged him to apply. Federico was hired right after finishing grad school and spent his first year with Crossover embracing the digital nomad lifestyle: traveling, living, and working in more than 10 different countries, armed with just a backpack and his laptop. He’s currently based out of his hometown of Montevideo, Uruguay.
Meet Andrzej. He’s a technical product owner at Crossover. Andrzej brings more than a decade of experience in the IT industry, having worked with large companies like Samsung and Bosch. Based in Warsaw, Poland, he discovered Crossover on a remote jobs site and says he “fell in love” with one of the positions listed. Now, as a product owner, Andrzej gets to put his experience leading projects and software engineering teams to good use. Here, he shares why it’s worthwhile to work remotely and offers some of his best tips for communicating with a distributed team.
Meet Hussein. He’s a software engineering manager at Crossover. Hussein is originally from Cairo, Egypt, but is now based out of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. He’s been working in IT for nearly 15 years in both technical and managerial roles and discovered Crossover while searching for a remote engineering job. Here, he shares how he got started in the tech industry and gives you an insider’s perspective of getting hired at Crossover. How did you get started in the IT industry? I started to advance my technical skills in the programming field working with .NET and C# languages. This allowed me to start as a junior web developer with a small-sized development company, then I moved to [a bigger] development company in Egypt to join as a senior solution developer. What was the Crossover application process like? The application process was really a great experience. I started my process by going through a question/answer trial hosted on HackerRank.com. After passing this stage, [there was a tech trial], and to be frank, it is a must-do experience as it shows your strengths and weaknesses, and for me it was a real benefit. Thirdly, and after passing the tech trial, I got a technical interview with one of Crossover’s technical experts [followed by] a call with the hiring manager. What’s the best thing about working at Crossover? I like being part of a big family from different cultures and backgrounds. What does your work setup look like? I usually work from home, but sometimes I will go into a coffee shop to work. What are some of the challenges of working remotely? Time zone differences would be the top challenge, but that can be easily solved by making sure you’re catching up with team and client time zones. Do you have any favorite tools that help you stay productive? My favorite tool is the internet; this is the only tool that helps me do my work and communicate with my team. How do you stay connected with your teammates? Usually through communication over Skype, Slack, or Zoom.
Meet Viviane. She’s a visual designer at Crossover. Viviane was looking for a job where she could combine work with travel and found the perfect fit in Crossover. Although she’s based in Brazil, she has the flexibility to spend time in cities like Amsterdam and New York for part of the year. She lends more than a decade of experience to supporting design projects for Crossover’s websites and apps. Here, Viviane gives us an insider’s perspective of working on a remote team and shares her tips for staying focused, productive, and connected with co-workers.
Meet Pedro. He’s a technical sales architect at Crossover. He got an early start in programming before studying computer engineering and becoming an IT consultant. Pedro is based in Lisbon, Portugal, and discovered Crossover through LinkedIn.
